“Navigation” is the ability to move around from screen to screen within RentWorks, as well as the ability to use screens effectively. You will encounter five types of navigation as you use RentWorks:

Navigation Buttons: Most RentWorks screens allow you to work with a series of data records of the same type. For example, vehicles, contracts, or, in this case, employees. When you enter a screen you will automatically view the first record in the series. The navigation buttons allow you to move to other records in the same series.

  • First - Jump back to the first record in the series.
  • Previous - Jump back to the record just prior to the one currently displayed.
  • Next - Jump forward to the record which follows the one currently displayed.
  • Last - Jump forward to the last record in the series.
  • New - Create a new record.
  • Copy - The “Copy” button creates a new record which is identical to the record currently on display. This provides a very convenient way to create a new record that is very similar to one which already exists. Simply “copy” the existing record, then make changes as necessary.
  • Edit - Once a record has been selected or is highlighted, click on this in order to make changes.
  • Delete - Once a record has been selected or is highlighted, click on this in order to delete it. Please note that in order maintain data integrity, certain record types cannot be deleted. If available, check the "inactive" box. This is useful for Locations, Local Companies, and Vehicle Class Codes.
  • Undo - If you have made any changes but want to revert back to the original record (and haven't clicked on Save yet), click on Undo.
  • Save - After you have created a new record, or edited (changed) a record, you must click on Save.

Logout Button: The “Logout” button (the one on the far right with the red arrow on top) is the normal way to log out of the software and allow someone else to log in without closing the application. Clicking this button does not save any changes that you have made. If you wish to save changes, do so using the “Save” button before logging out. This is important to you. Everything that is done within RentWorks is tagged with the identity of the active login. You do not want your login associated with things that other people may be doing. As a related security feature, when the “Main Screen” is on display, you will be logged out automatically following a specified period of inactivity. This protects you if you are away from the terminal and forget to log out. (The automatic logout feature is not in effect on any other screen.)

Tabs: In RentWorks, users can open multiple programs at the same time. Each new program opened creates another tab on the data entry side of the screen. Users can switch between programs by clicking on the various tabs they have open in the data entry area.

Screen Shortcut Buttons: Many work screen button bars include buttons which allow you to jump directly to other work screens which support or are closely related to the screen you are currently using. Individual icons are intended to suggest the screen which they access. For example, in the example above, clicking on the button which looks like a vehicle with its hood up will take you to the “Show Vehicle Problems” screen. Holding your mouse arrow over a button will reveal a popup window which contains a brief explanation of the button’s purpose.

Navigate to a Work Screen: Navigating to a RentWorks work screen is simple and easy. Everything is in front of you at all times. For example, to enter a new Reservation:

Step 1: Select the “Counter” Screen Category.

Step 2: Select the “Reservations” folder in the upper left.

Step 3: The Reservations Browser window appears.

Step 4: Select “New” from the icon tool bar.
